My semester abroad in Rome brought to life all the different art and architecture I had learned about in my previous semesters of art history at Providence College. I was able to see countless artworks and historical sites that I had only seen on a screen in a classroom. While studying in Rome this past spring, I visited canonical ancient structures like the Colosseum and the Pantheon and saw an incredible range of Roman sculptures. I also visited many Byzantine and early medieval churches around Rome like the Basilica of St. Agnes outside the walls. I also had the opportunity to visit other cities throughout Europe. I travelled to London where I saw great Gothic works like Westminster Abbey. In the city of Florence, I had the opportunity to engage with great Renaissance works like Michaelangelo’s David and Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus. Later in Paris I visited the Musee d’Orsay where I saw some of the great Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works like Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Edgar Degas’s the Little Dancer. My semester abroad brought me through centuries of European art beginning in the ancient and carrying through the modern era, with everything in between.
