The Carriers: Joiri Minaya and Anne Austin Pearce

Opening on Wednesday, October 27th at 5pm, “The Carriers: Joiri Minaya and Anne Austin Pearce”, features two artists work’s that aim to question the tendencies of colonial ownership and control over nature.  This exhibition was curated by PCG’s Curator at Large, Kate McNamara.

Minaya, a multi-disciplinary artist, has an ongoing performative photograph series “Containers”, in which she is featured in a bodysuit with tropical designs, against the backdrop of a natural environment.  In this composition, her tropical appearance critiques the habits of colonialism in order to relocate self-governance.  While Pearce’s small glass vessels resemble the results of an oil spill combined with natural elements such as shells and sticks.  Through this imagery, the audience can visualize the perpetual suffocation of nature by humanity.

“The Carriers brings together the intergenerational and multi-disciplinary work of artists Joiri Minaya (b.1990) and Anne Austin Pearce (b.1968), whose art practices endeavor to unpack the colonial urges and histories around collecting, controlling, and exploiting Nature.” (McNamara)
